Best Time to Buy a NAS: Seasonal Pricing Guide

NAS prices are not random. They follow annual cycles driven by Amazon sale events, manufacturer product launches, and seasonal retail patterns. Timing a purchase around those cycles can save real money on a Synology or QNAP enclosure, and on the drives that go in it.
This guide explains when to buy, when to wait, and how to avoid the most common timing mistakes. It does not list current prices, so check the price history for the exact model before you buy.
The Annual NAS Pricing Calendar
Here is what a typical year looks like for NAS pricing. Amazon’s event dates change from year to year, so the 2026 dates are included.
January-February: Prices are usually at or near full retail. This is a poor time to buy unless you find leftover holiday inventory.
March: Amazon’s Big Spring Sale (March 25-31 in 2026) is open to all shoppers, with some Prime-exclusive deals. It is smaller than the Prime and Black Friday events, but it is worth checking if you need a drive or enclosure in spring.
Spring and summer launches: Synology’s launch timing varies. Its 2025 Plus-series refresh reached the US between June and July: the DS225+, DS425+, and DS925+ were announced on June 4, 2025, the DS1525+ on June 25, and the DS1825+ and DS725+ on July 8. When replacements ship, clearly identified previous-generation models may move into clearance, but the discount must be compared with the successor’s features and support.
June or July: Amazon Prime Day (June 23-26 in 2026). NAS enclosures often see discounts, and drive prices can be competitive. Synology and QNAP discounts are usually more modest than those on budget brands and drives.
August-September: Prices usually return to normal. Not a great buying window unless you catch a retailer-specific sale.
October: Amazon has run an October Prime event every year since 2022; the 2026 Prime Big Deal Days run October 6-7 and require Prime. Discounts are usually smaller than at Black Friday, but NAS drives in particular are worth watching.
November: Black Friday (November 27, 2026) and Cyber Monday (November 30). This usually brings the broadest NAS discounts of the year, and it is the event where Synology hardware is most likely to be discounted.
December: Prices creep back up after Cyber Monday. Some offers linger through mid-December, but selection narrows.
Prime Day: The Mid-Year Window
Amazon held its 2026 Prime Day on June 23-26. For NAS buyers, Prime Day is usually the second-best event of the year behind Black Friday.
What to Expect
Synology: Modest discounts, when there are any. The Synology DS225+ and DS925+ are the current 2-bay and 4-bay Plus models, so check their price history rather than trusting a percentage badge.
QNAP: Models such as the QNAP TS-464 often appear in Amazon sale events. Compare the exact model and memory configuration across sellers.
TerraMaster and UGREEN: Budget brands tend to run the most visible promotions. If you are considering a budget NAS, a sale event is when these brands are most worth comparing on price.
NAS drives: Drive discounts during Prime Day can rival Black Friday’s. If you need Seagate IronWolf 8TB or WD Red Plus 8TB drives in summer, check their price history then rather than waiting by default.
Prime Day Strategy
You need an Amazon Prime membership to shop Prime Day and Prime Big Deal Days offers. If you do not want Prime year-round, a free trial (if you are eligible) covers the event; cancel before it renews if you do not need it.
Set up price alerts on Keepa or CamelCamelCamel for the specific NAS models you want. Both chart Amazon price history, so you can see whether a Prime Day “deal” is a real discount or the normal street price with a sale tag.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday: Usually the Best Window
November usually brings the broadest NAS discounts of the year. If you can wait until Black Friday without holding up a project, it is usually worth it.
What to Expect
Synology Plus-series models: Discounts vary by model and retailer. The current 2025 models (DS225+, DS925+ and their larger siblings) are the default choices. Leftover DS224+ and DS923+ stock may be discounted further as clearance.
QNAP: Models such as the TS-464 commonly appear in Black Friday promotions.
NAS drives: Seagate IronWolf and WD Red Plus drives are regularly part of Black Friday sales. Work out the cost per terabyte from the current price and compare it with that drive’s recent history.
What Makes Black Friday Different
Black Friday discounts tend to be broader than Prime Day’s, and they appear at more retailers at once. If you specifically want a Synology unit, Black Friday is usually your best opportunity.
Most Amazon Black Friday deals are open to all shoppers; Amazon marks some as Prime-exclusive. In 2025, Amazon’s Black Friday Week ran from November 20 to December 1, so expect early offers well before the day itself.

Product Launch Cycles: When Old Models Get Cheap
Understanding when Synology and QNAP release new hardware helps you time purchases of both current and previous-generation units.
Synology Release Pattern
The last two digits of a Synology model name are its model year, which can run ahead of the release date. The DS923+ launched on November 16, 2022, and its successor, the DS925+, was announced in the US on June 4, 2025. Synology does not refresh every model every year, so a generation can last two years or more.
The practical timeline:
- Announcement: Watch Synology’s press releases. In 2025, the Plus-series announcements came between June and July.
- Availability: The DS925+ was available through Synology partners and resellers from its announcement date.
- Clearance: Previous-generation models then start to discount as retailers clear stock.
This creates a buying opportunity. When Synology announces a new Plus-series model, start watching prices on the outgoing model, and compare the discounted price with the successor’s features.
The new model is not always the better fit. The DS925+ has a 4-core Ryzen V1500B, two 2.5GbE ports, and two M.2 NVMe slots, but no PCIe slot, so it cannot take Synology’s 10GbE card. The discontinued DS923+ has two 1GbE ports and a PCIe slot for the E10G22-T1-Mini 10GbE card. If you want 10GbE, a clearance or used DS923+ can still suit you better. See best NAS for home lab for current recommendations.
QNAP Release Pattern
QNAP releases hardware more often than Synology and across a wider product range, so the “wait for the next model” question matters less. Check QNAP’s product pages for the model you want before buying.
QNAP models also appear in sale events more often, so you can usually find a good offer on current-generation hardware without waiting for a successor launch.
When Clearance and Seasonal Discounts Overlap
The best possible timing is to buy a previous-generation Synology or QNAP unit during Black Friday after the successor has already launched. You get the clearance discount and the seasonal discount together. In practice, this means watching an outgoing model, such as any remaining DS923+ stock after the DS925+ arrived, during the first Black Friday after its replacement ships. Make sure the discount is large enough to offset what the newer model adds.
Refurbished and Renewed NAS Units
Buying refurbished can save money, but the source determines the warranty and your return rights.
Where Refurbished NAS Units Come From
QNAP Certified Refurbished: QNAP sells refurbished units through its own online store. They carry a one-year limited warranty, are not eligible for extended warranty, and cannot be returned. That is shorter protection than a new unit, so price it accordingly.
Synology refurbished: Synology’s own storefront on Newegg (Synology America Corp) lists refurbished units. Synology’s warranty policy gives certified refurbished products a two-year warranty unless the offer states otherwise, so check each listing’s warranty line.
Amazon Renewed: Amazon’s Renewed program includes NAS devices from both brands. Renewed items are inspected and tested by a third-party company, and Amazon lets you return them within 90 days of receipt for a replacement or refund. Manufacturer warranty coverage is a separate question: Synology’s warranty, for example, covers only buyers from Synology, its resellers, and authorized distributors, and it ends when a unit is resold.
When Refurbished Units Appear
Refurbished and open-box stock of an outgoing model tends to grow in the months after its successor ships. That is when to look for a refurbished DS923+ or DS224+. The same pattern holds for QNAP.
Holiday return season (January-February) also produces a wave of renewed units on Amazon, though these are often open-box rather than truly refurbished.
What to Watch For
NAS enclosures are relatively safe to buy refurbished because they have few moving parts. The drives are the wear items, and those are sold separately. The main risks are cosmetic damage, degraded thermal paste, and reduced remaining warranty.
Avoid Amazon Renewed NAS units from sellers with limited review histories. Stick to the manufacturer’s own refurbished channel or authorized resellers when possible.
Drives Follow Different Cycles
NAS enclosures and NAS hard drives do not always hit their lowest prices at the same time. Smart buyers separate the two purchases.
Drive Pricing Patterns
NAS hard drives like the Seagate IronWolf 8TB and WD Red Plus 8TB follow commodity pricing more than NAS enclosures do. Drive prices are influenced by manufacturing capacity, component supply, and seasonal retail demand.
In general:
- Prime Day and Prime Big Deal Days can produce strong drive prices. Seagate and WD models regularly appear in these events.
- Black Friday is the other main window. Larger drives usually show bigger dollar savings, so compare cost per terabyte rather than the headline discount.
- Between events, drive prices drift. Set price alerts rather than guessing which month will be cheapest.
If your NAS is a 2025 Synology model, update it to DSM 7.3 or later before installing third-party drives. DSM 7.3 (October 2025) lets 2025 Plus, Value, and J series models create storage pools on third-party drives, while M.2 storage pools and cache still need drives from Synology’s compatibility list.
Buy Strategy
If you find a good NAS enclosure offer during a launch clearance, you do not have to buy drives at the same time. Buy the enclosure, wait for the next sale event, and buy drives then. One caution: make sure you can test the enclosure before its return window closes, even if that means borrowing a spare drive.
For drive recommendations at any time of year, see best hard drive for NAS.
Common Mistakes
Buying in January. Post-holiday prices are usually at full retail. The next Amazon events are the Big Spring Sale in March and Prime Day in early summer (March 25-31 and June 23-26 in 2026). If you can wait a few months, you will likely save money.
Ignoring the product cycle. Buying a current-generation Synology unit two weeks before its successor launches means you paid full price for hardware that is about to become last-gen. Check Synology’s press releases before pulling the trigger.
Treating every Amazon “deal” as real. A struck-through “list price” beside a percentage-off badge can make a mediocre discount look impressive. Check the price history on Keepa or CamelCamelCamel before assuming a sale price is good. If the item has been at that price for weeks, it is not a deal.
Buying drives and enclosure together at full price. NAS enclosures and drives hit their price floors at different times. Splitting the purchases across two sale events can save a meaningful amount on a 4-bay setup.
Forgetting the Prime requirement. Prime Day and Prime Big Deal Days require a Prime membership, and some Black Friday deals are Prime-exclusive. If you only want Prime for the event, check whether you are eligible for a free trial and cancel afterward.
Overlooking refurbished options. A manufacturer-refurbished unit can be good value if you can handle cosmetic imperfections, but read the warranty first. QNAP’s certified refurbished units carry one year and cannot be returned, and a Synology bought secondhand from a private seller has no Synology warranty at all.
Wrap-Up
The two best times to buy a NAS are usually Black Friday and Cyber Monday (November 27-30, 2026) and Prime Day (June 23-26 in 2026), with Prime Big Deal Days (October 6-7, 2026) in between. Of these, Black Friday usually wins, especially for Synology hardware.
If you are not buying during a sale event, the next best window is the clearance period after new models ship.
The weakest time to buy is usually January and February: no major sales, no product-cycle clearances, and full retail pricing.
Set price alerts, separate your enclosure and drive purchases, and check whether a model refresh is imminent before buying. These three habits will save you more than any single sale event.
